FG sets up c’ttee to address labour demands

The Federal Government on Wednesday constituted a 16-man committee to address issues that necessitated the three-day strike called by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) after the fuel pump price hike. Mr Babachir Lawal, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), stated this in Abuja after a meeting of the Federal Government delegation with the organised labour.

He said that the meeting was called to work out modalities on ways to resolve the issues raised by the organised labour.

“I am happy to announce that a 16-man committee has been set up as a technical committee, half from the labour side and half from the government.

“The committee is to discuss issues concerning the minimum wage, to advice on possible modalities of working out ways to arrive at a compromise. “Secondly, we have agreed that the 16-man committee will look at the issue of implementation and the allocation of resources on the half a trillion naira palliatives budgeted for by the Federal Government.

“We have looked at the totality of the issues that are in contention, especially the issue of the pump price. We have set up a technical committee to look at the details.

“ The fact that the pricing issue and the template have to be considered by an appropriate body which by law is Petroleum Pricing Product Regulation Agency (PPPRA). “Part of the issue we discussed is to get that board in place, as you know for the past few years that board has not been in place.

“It is their responsibility to actually interrogate the template that has been used to arrive at the price of N145 per litre and we have been able to get it constituted,’’ he said. Sen. Court adjourns N2.1bn suit against MTN till June 29

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) sitting in Lagos, Wednesday adjourned till June 29, a $13.14 million (about N2.1 billion) suit by Paul Odunewu, an ex-Network Group Operations Manager in MTN Nigeria against the company. Justice Oyejoju Oyewumi adjourned for hearing of a motion filed by defence counsel, Mrs. Ayo Obe, SAN, seeking to substitute a witness.

Odunewu has accused the company of withholding his entitlements, including a long-term incentive scheme (share option) worth over $13.14 million (about N2.1 billion). He is also demanding N100 million damages, among others. MTN Group Limited, South Africa; MTN Nigeria and MTN International, Mauritius are defendants in the suit.

At the commencement of proceedings yesterday, claimant’s counsel, Kemi Balogun, SAN, opposed the motion on the grounds among others that the defendants intended to use it to amend their statement of defence without following due process.

He said: “There was no mention of amendment of statement of defence. The amendment seeks to change the colouration of the entire case in view of the evidence already tendered.”

Advertisement Justice Oyewumi directed the claimant to file his objection in writing and adjourned till June 29 for hearing of the motion and October 24, 25 and 27 for the defendants to open their case. At the last hearing in November, a former chief executive of the company,

Mr. Adrian Wood, told the court that Odunewu increased MTN’s base stations from 100 to 2,500 in three years and was one of 50 top employees offered the company’s shares. Wood, an Australian, said to keep such top employees, MTN Nigeria initiated a retention policy of leadership development and succession, under which those with potential were promoted within the MTN group offered shares.

He said: “Odunewu was nominated as a key employee and was offered a share option plan being devised at that time. “By 2004, he was one of 50 senior employees chosen to participate in MTN Nigeria’s share offer plan.”

Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo alleviated concerns over his fitness ahead of Saturday’s Champions League final against Atletico Madrid as the three-time World Player of the Year returned to training on Wednesday.

Ronaldo limped off towards the end of training on Tuesday after suffering a knock on a persistent left thigh problem. Real’s all-time record scorer missed three games last month due to injury and was also left out a practice match on Saturday by coach Zinedine Zidane as a precaution.

Advertisement Ronaldo is aiming to break his own record of 17 Champions League goals in a season in Milan having already netted 16 in the competition so far this campaign. Reps ask FG to stop sale of refineries

The House of Representatives Committee on Privatisation has asked the Federal government to stop the proposed privatisation of the nation’s three refineries with immediate effect. Slated for sale by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) are the Port-Harcourt, Kaduna and Warri refineries.

The decision of the lawmakers followed the disclosure by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) that it was not aware of the proposed sale.

The lawmakers said the proposed sale failed to follow due process with NNPC acting without the involvement of other stakeholders as contained in the BPE Act. The House said NNPC action violated Section 11 of the BPE Act, 2009.

The directive was handed down Wednesday during an interactive session between House Committee on Privatisation, NNPC and BPE on the subject matter. In his presentation, NNPC’s Group Executive Director (Refineries), Anibor Kragba, who represented the Minister of State (Petroleum Resources) and NNPC’s Group Managing Director (GMD), Ibe Kachikwu, had told the Committee that the exercise was not privatisation. According to him, rehabilitation of the refineries is capital intensive which was responsible for sourcing for core investors that can undertake the project and revive the refineries.

However trouble began when the GED was asked about who authorized the exercise under whatever name without the input of the National Assembly.

At this juncture, Kragba responded that he would need to clarify from his superiors, since he was barely a month in office having been appointed a couple of weeks ago.

When asked if BPE was involved in the process, its acting Director General (DG), Vincent Akpotarie denied the knowledge and participation of his agency in the proposed sale. Kragba’s response to seek clarification from higher office however drew the ire of the Committee that called his competence to question. Advertisement

The Committee regretted that it was the action of NNPC that the whole country is suffering, while noting that there was no reason for the continuation of the session since the GED is incapable of giving authoritative answers to questions thrown at him.

The Committee also wondered whether there was handover notes that the GED could refer to in response to the queries of the Committee since assumption of office. The Committee expressed disappointment that it deferred to accept the representation of Kragba on the basis that he claimed to have the mandate of the corporation to make pronouncements on its behalf but failed to live up to the expectation of the Committee.

On being told that he was incompetent to handle the matter at hand, Kragba responded saying, “With due respect to this Honourable Committee, I was appointed into the office by Mr President who believed my competency”.

The Committee would have none of that from the GED for using such a language on the House. Before aborting the hearing due to the shouting bout, the Committee ruled that the NNPC should stop the exercise with immediately for gross violation of the BPE Act. Chairman of the Committee, Ahmed Yerima warned Kragba to be mindful of his choice of words before the parliament, “I am sure if Mr President reads this BPE Act, he will not be happy with what you are doing.

“We are preaching change, change in our ways of doing things for the betterment of the Country and yet we the leaders are doing things ,the other way round, impunity is still rampant, am a member of the All Progressive Congress and we promised the people real change before they gave us their votes,” he stated.

The hearing was abruptly adjourned with a caveat that the Petroleum Resources Minister, Kachikwu must appear before the Committee.

Today in African History; 19th May

On this day in 1994, Malawi’s first President Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda since independence from Britain in 1964 conceded defeat to Bakili Muluzi in the country’s first multi-party election.

Having spent 30 years at the helm as Africa’s longest ruling dictator, Kamuzu conceded defeat and congratulated the incoming president wholeheartedly and expressed hope that he would usher Malawi into a new era. Banda died in a hospital in South Africa in 1997, at the age of 101 and despite the controversy which surrounded his rule, he was given a state funeral.

Also on this day in 1901, Marthinus Wessel Pretorius (81), first president of the ZAR, died in Potchefstroom. Marthinus Wessel Pretorius was the first president of the South African Republic, and also compiled the constitution of the Republic.

After the death of his father, the famous Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius in 1853, he was appointed as the Commandant-General of the ZAR (South African Republic) and moved from his farm Kalkheuwel, near Broederstroom, to the city of Potchefstroom. NLC Strike: Workers resume fully in Edo

Jethro Ibileke/Benin: Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) appears to be loosing the grip on workers in Edo, as the indefinite strike declared by its leadership to protest the fuel price increase suffered serious setback.
Workers in the state public service shunned the sit-at-home order and resumed work at their duty posts.
Workers were seen at their respective duty posts at the various ministries visited.
They apparently heeded the warning of the State Head of Service, Mrs. Idahor Gladys, who in a statement on Wednesday said the government would not hesitate to invoke the ‘no work no pay’ rule for any worker that joined the strike, adding that the strike was illegal.‎
Some leaders of the NLC in the state, led by Emmanuel Ademokun, walked through two major streets of the town in protest.
Ademokun who insisted that the strike continues even though workers were at work, appealed for artisans to join the protest.
The situation was, however, different at some public schools as pupils were sent away for the second day, an indication that teachers defied the state government order to resume work.

Niger workers join NLC protest

Alhaji Yahaya Ndako, Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Niger, said the protest against hike in petrol price was ongoing in the State despite low turnout.
He said this in Minna on Thursday that the low level of awareness of the reason for labour’s protest was responsible for the low turnout.
He said more enlightenment was being carried out now.
He decried the non-participation of financial institutions in the state in the protest.
“You can see that the strike is perfectly going on in Niger state but for the banks that refused to join us.
“All the industrial unions in Niger state have joined us apart from the financial institutions. I don’t know what is wrong with their union. Honestly it is sad”, he said.

Ndako, however, said “one cannot get 100 per cent participation in strike. So, despite hiccups, the NLC strike is succeeding.”
In Minna, both private and public schools were in session and Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the state offered skeletal services.
NLC placed a notice at the state secretariat saying, “strike continues. All workers are to remain at home until further notice.”
Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Bala Elkana, told NAN that police personnel have been deployed across the state to secure lives and property.
According to him, “we have deployed police to all the nooks and crannies of Niger state to ensure that nobody is harassed and nobody forces anybody to do what he or she did not intend to do.”
Elkana said that the police intended to keep its personnel in the streets as long as the strike lasted.
“This is because we don’t want hoodlums to hijack the strike”, he said.

Northern group wants pipeline vandals prosecuted

A northern group under the aegis of Voice of Northern Nigeria Youth Initiative has called for the arrest and prosecution of any individual found guilty of vandalizing oil installations in the Niger Delta region.

The Niger Delta Avengers had continued to destroy oil installations belonging to multinationals, leaving the country to lose billions daily. National President of the group, Yusuf Musa, during a briefing on Wednesday, in Abuja, explained that the country could no longer endure bloodsheds in the region.

He called for the questioning of any powerful individual supporting the Niger Delta Avengers, including former president, Goodluck Jonathan, if found to be involved with the group. Musa, called on elder statesman Chief Edwin Clark, to intervene in the situation by calling the new agitators to order to protect the region.

President of the National Coalition of Niger Delta Ex-Agitators, NCNDE-A, Israel Akpodoro, recently accused President Jonathan to have created the Niger Delta Avengers prior to his exit in office last year. Musa said:

“We the voice of northern Nigeria youth initiative wants to align ourselves to that stand of the leader of the ex-agitators.

“He is a very patriotic Nigerian for him to have revealed this information. It is for the Federal Government to seriously attend to this issue because Nigerians are tired of bloodsheds.

We are tired of crisis. “Jonathan, Asari Dokubo, Tompolo, Edwin Clark should be invited for questioning. Already, leader of ex-agitators have said it that Jonathan has hand in this.

He should be brought to book because nobody is above the law. We need the militants as Nigerians so we do not want anybody to be killed.”

He stated that the country, after winning the war on Boko Haram could not afford to embark on another battle with the emerging Niger Delta group. Musa, emphasized that the country needed peace, adding that any individual who “has hand in crisis of this type should be arrested and prosecuted.”

He further said the lives of Nigerians are at stake considering the current state of the economy. In his remark, an All Progressive Congress (APC) chieftain, ‎Chief Peter Igho, threw his support for questioning of those involved.

He stated that the people of Niger Delta should be cautioned to promote peace in the region. “People like Israel can still manage whatever problem or destruction of pipes in the region if given the opportunity,” Igho added.

NLC Strike: Riots In Lagos Over Fuel Price Hike

Riots have broken out in some parts of Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos, as a faction of Nigerian Labour Congress have ahead with an indefinite nationwide strike on Wednesday.

The Trade Union Congress announced their decision to pull out of the strike after a National Industrial Court issued a restraining order against the strike on Tuesday.

Many uncertain Lagosians shunned the strike action called over the hike in the pump price of fuel. The government had last week introduced a new price band for gasoline following a partial liberalization of the oil sector. President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration on May 11 increased gasoline prices by 67 percent in order to attract private importers, who will be able to recover their costs and help end fuel shortages that have persisted for months in the country.

A faction of the NLC led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba had announced that an indefinite strike commences today after its meeting with the Federal Government ended in a deadlock.

The other faction led by Joe Ajaero had agreed with the Federal Government to set up a joint committee to deliberate on the issue of minimum wage, N500bn social investment and review the N145 new pump price of gasoline. The two factions of the NLC had recently asked for a new minimum wage based on the present economic realities.

The committee has two weeks to report back in two weeks. While some workers aligned with the Wabba-led faction, several others followed the directive by the Ajaero-led NLC that there would be no strike.

Hoodlums were believed to have taken advantage of the confusion to create mayhem, smashing windscreens and hurling stones at passing vehicles. Security agencies had since taken control of areas where violence was reported earlier on Wednesday.

Group Hails NLC Faction For Backing Out Of Strike

The Stand Up Nigeria (SUN), a coalition of 50 civil society organizations has commended Nigerian workers for shunning the strike being called by a faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), describing it as needless and self-serving.

According to the National Coordinator of (SUN), Comrade Philip Agbese while reacting to the outcome of the meeting between the federal government and Labour, it is obvious that patriotic Nigerians have resolved to support the current administration’s deregulation policy.

He lauded the Joe Ajaero-led faction of the NLC for standing on the side of the people. He accused the Ayuba Wabba faction of not doing anything to protect workers rights, saying “workers are being owed several months salaries and the NLC did not go on strike.”

Agbese said it was high time fuel subsidy was removed and the government did the right thing by removing it. He noted that the N1.2 trillion paid out as subsidy in the 2015 budget would have built more infrastructure and created jobs.

“As I speak, we have received the casket that signifies the final death of “subsidy” which has been used to milk the resources of this country by a certain minute minority and it shall be formally interned by 2pm today in the full glare of the Nigerian media for all to see that this epidemic will never visit us again in the nearest future,” Agbese said.
