The senator representing Bayelsa east senatorial district, reacting to news that the federal government on Sunday, August 28, destroyed 15 containers of imported frozen fish, via his twitter handle @benmurraybruce, queried why the Buhari-led government destroyed confiscated food products when such the foodstuffs could have been used in feeding the millions of Nigerians starving in IDP’s camps.

Sex offences rise threefold in schools

The number of sex offences in schools reported to police has almost trebled in four years, a study has shown.

Ten sexual offences on school premises are reported to police in England and Wales on average each school day, according to figures compiled by Plan International, a children’s charity.

The number of allegations rose from 719 in 2011-12 to 1,955 in 2014-15 in what the NSPCC has called a “very worrying trend”.

Girls were the victims in two-thirds of cases, and children as young as five were recorded carrying out assaults. Lucy Russell, UK manager of girls’ rights campaigning at Plan International, said cases involving very young children were rare.

The most frequent alleged offenders were other pupils, who were identified as the suspects in 29 per cent of the cases, while teachers and other staff were the suspects in 15 per cent. Russell said girls may be underreporting sexual offences.

Court rejects longer sentence appeal for Pistorius

A South African judge on Friday rejected the state’s appeal seeking a longer jail sentence for Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who is serving a six-year term for killing his girlfriend three years ago. Thokozile Masipa — the same judge who imposed the sentence last month — said in the High Court in Johannesburg that she was not persuaded there was a “reasonable prospect of success on appeal”.

“The application for leave to appeal against the sentence is dismissed with costs,” she said. The prosecution had been pushing for a longer sentence against the fallen 29-year-old sprint star over the 2013 murder of Reeva Steenkamp.

“The sentence of six years is shockingly lenient and disturbingly inappropriate,” prosecutor Gerrie Nel argued in court. Pistorius shot Steenkamp, a model and law graduate, in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013, saying he mistook her for a burglar when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet.

At his sentencing in July, Masipa listed mitigating factors for ordering Pistorius to serve less than half the minimum 15-year term for murder, including the athlete’s claim he believed he was shooting an intruder.

“I’m of the view that a long term of imprisonment will not serve justice,” Masipa said then. – ‘Enough is enough’ – But Nel argued that the six-year sentence was flawed and that it should be appealed. “Another court may find that this court misdirected itself,” said Nel. Masipa was also the judge who had originally convicted Pistorius of the lesser charge of culpable homicide, the equivalent of manslaughter, in 2014.

An appeals court upgraded his conviction to murder in December last year. Pistorius’s defence said it was an “insult” to suggest that the court’s sentencing had been flawed and that it was time the case came to a close. “Enough is enough. What does the state want?” defence lawyer Barry Roux said. “This process has been exhausted beyond the point of exhaustion,”

he added, accusing the prosecution of sending Pistorius “like a ping pong ball between courts”. Pistorius, who pleaded not guilty at his high-profile trial, has always denied killing 29-year-old Steenkamp in a rage, saying he was trying to protect her.

South African media reports earlier this month said that Pistorius had been put on suicide watch following mysterious wrist injuries. The year before he killed Steenkamp, Pistorius — known as the Blade Runner — became the first double-amputee to race at Olympic level when he appeared at the London 2012 Games.

How to introduce budgeting to your spouse

You are enthusiastic about creating a budget and managing your money carefully. Your spouse groans at the idea. What can you do? Many people find themselves in this exact predicament every day. One spouse or partner tends to be fiscally-minded, while the other pays no attention to money and scoffs at the idea of drastically cutting back. How can the two of you reach financial harmony? Here are a few tips that might help get your spouse or partner on board with the idea of budgeting.

Set a common goal

Don’t open the conversation by saying, “Honey, I think you need to cut back on X.” A statement like this frames the idea of budgeting and saving in negative terms. This makes financial management look like a string of orders and deprivations.

Instead, open the conversation by saying, “Honey, let’s talk about some of the goals we want to accomplish within the next five to 10 years. What would we like to do?”

The two of you should have a long conversation about what your ideal life looks like together. Don’t discuss money at this point – just talk about the vision. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Would you like to spend one month travelling through Europe together?

Would you like to buy a sailboat and spend a few months in the Caribbean?

Brewer AB Inbev to cut 5,500 jobs after SABMiller merger

The world’s top brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev will cut around 5,500 jobs after it completes its huge merger with rival SABMiller, a source with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Friday. Investor documents posted online Friday said the Belgium-based brewer of Budweiser and Stella Artois would slash about three percent of its enlarged staff over three years following the tie-up. SABMiller employs about 70,000 employees in more than 80 countries, while AB Inbev has about 150,000 staff in 26 countries, according to company figures.

AB InBev is already the world’s top brewer and the SABMiller acquisition is in line to be the third largest merger in history if it goes through. A crunch vote by SABMiller shareholders to clinch the deal is set for September 28 with the companies to be officially combined on October 10. AB InBev last month raised its offer for SABMiller to £45 a share, after sterling slumped following Britain’s Brexit vote to leave the EU, cutting the value of the deal to global investors when measured in other currencies and triggering shareholder resistance.

The new offer values the London-headquartered firm at about £79 billion ($104 billion), and the deal is expected to boost the unified firms’ prospects in developing markets in Africa and China.

How Nigeria will bounce back

Fola Ojo

He was named Sam. His parents had waited for many years after their marriage before mummy’s womb popped open. Prior to his birth, some divine instructions had been given about the don’ts and dos around Sam.

One of them was that the lad must never be taken to a barber shop for a haircut. Why? The source of his physical strength which made him a mighty man in life was in his hair. As Sam grew up to be a young man, he also grew up philandering and lusting after women to a patheticapotheosis. One of his many women became a mole planted in his life by an enemy nation.

The secret agent eventually got to know where Sam’s power domiciled. The cruel cocotte revealed the secret to the enemy who brought in a barber. Sam’s hair was cut. His strength was thus cut down. What made him stand out among nations vamoosed before his gouged eyes.

On that fateful day, Ogaga had conveyed passengers with his commercial bus from Lagos to Asaba and instead of passing the night in the accommodation provided for drivers by the company, he decided to spend the night with the prostitute in a brothel local on Okpanam road. They allegedly agreed on the sum of N15,000 for the night but after engaging the lady all through the night, Ogaga refused to pay her the complete money claiming that the lady did not meet up to his standard and that he had spent money buying her drinks and pepper soup the night before.

This however infuriated the lady who insisted he must pay her in full and a fight was said to have ensued between them. The man was said to have beaten the lady. In a bid to free herself, she held on to his manhood and sank her teeth on it, almost biting the cap off. It was his screams that alerted people in the hotel. He was rushed to the hospital where he is currently receiving treatment

Rio Olympics: Team Nigeria, disaster waiting to happen?

The Olympics started in far-away Rio in Brazil. Many countries have adequately prepared their athletes and are eager to see the games begin.

The games kicks off on August 5. While so many countries have completed the preparations of their athletes because they began four years ago; immediately after the London 2012, Nigeria, the most populous black country and “giant of Africa” failed to understand why she is sending her athletes to the games.

This confusion is borne out of the country’s legacy of “fire brigade approach” to virtually everything she undertakes. One would have expected that as a country which performed woefully at the London 2012 Olympics, Nigeria should have been one of the countries that are by now very much prepared for the edition in Rio but the reverse is the case.

At the London 2012, Nigeria, the self acclaimed or sometime ago giant of Africa did not have a podium finish while some African countries Nigerians believe to be minor and of lower status had their national flags and anthem paraded and sang.

The failure of the country to have a podium finish did not spur her to take a decision to prepare her athletes adequately for Rio 2016 games in order to take the world by storm and recover the fame of being touted the giant of Africa and one of the world’s super powers in sports. Nigeria rather went to sleep after the London disaster.

The only remarkable step the country took was organising a Presidential Sports Summit immediately after the games. But the big question is; what benefit was derived from the summit? With the seriousness attached to the summit held at the Presidential banquet hall in Aso Villa with former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan leading his Cabinet members; the national assembly members, states governors, captains of industries from within and without the shores of Nigeria in attendance the country should have at least learnt how to begin early preparations of her athletes to major competitions like the Olympic Games.
