– Police officers from the Oyo state security surveillance code-named ‘Operation Burst’ have apprehended some suspected cult members
– The arrested cultists are six in number and are students of Ibarapa Polytechnic located in Eruwa town, Oyo state
– The Polytechnic students were nabbed because they were reported to be involved in cultism related activities
The entrance of the Ibarapa Polytechnic in Eruwa, Oyo state While parading the suspected cult members in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo state on Friday, May 13, it was gathered that men from Operation Burst had been on the trail of the cultists and had been following their movements for at least three months.
Their cup became filled after series of complaints of cult related cases by the management of Ibarapa Polytechnic, which led to their arrest.
One of the top officers of the security outfit by the name Brigadier General Usman Yussuf told journalists that three of the arrested students confessed they were members of various cult groups.
Brig Gen Yussuf stated: “Following our intolerance for crimes in the state, six students of Ibarapa Polytechnic, Eruwa were arrested for cultism and cult-related matters yesterday (that is Thursday, May 12).
“We have been following on a lead from one renounced cultist whom the cult members have been tormenting to woo him back to their midst. He has suffered a lot of molestation and harassment from the group but he has been so supportive in providing useful information that led to the arrest of the suspects
“Although investigation is still ongoing but three of the suspects have confessed to be cultist while the other three have also been identified as cultist by those who confessed despite their initial denial.”
The names of the arrested students given by the Brigadier General are: Olufunmilayo Olanrewaju Bamidele, 24, ND 1 student of Mass Communication Department; Oluwafunmilola Oloyede, 23, ND II Computer Science student and Olowonikoko Oluwasina, 24.
The remaining suspected cultists are Mubarak Adesewa Moshood, 24, ND II Fine Art student; David Abodunrin, 22 and Agbebi Oluwafemi, 23.
About a month ago in the South-South region of the country, three persons were confirmed dead following cult battle in the Bayelsa state owned university, Niger Delta University, located in Ammassoma in the Southern Ijaw area of the state.
