Niche selection is undoubtedly an important part of making money online. Without the right niche it doesn't matter how great your product is.
If the traffic isn't there you won't make money online.
By doing niche research you can gather a long list of potential niches for your information marketing business. But how do you know which niche is the right to choose?
Here are three ways to give your niche the acid test so you can be sure you're spending your time on the right niche idea.
1. Is there a forum devoted to your niche?
People come online to get information and to connect with others. A forum or other type of online community is a perfect place to do both. Forums and online communities that are devoted to a specific topic are not only a good place to find potential customers, but they are also a sign that you are on the right track.
If there is a forum that is dedicated to a specific topic you can be sure that there is enough interest in the topic to provide you with a quality leads for a long time.
However, don't take the simple presence of a forum as a sign that you should go for that niche.
If you find a forum, take a look at the amount of topics, how often people post in the forum and how many active members there appear to be on the forum.
If the forum has just a handful of posts and the last one was four months ago, you should look elsewhere for niche inspiration.
2. Are there are already products selling in the niche?
This may seem like a no brainer but you'd be surprised by how many people think they've found a hot niche because no one else has touched it yet.
Here's a wake up call: if there isn't a product in your topic, it isn't that hot.
People have been marketing online for decades now and the chances that someone hasn't hit on that niche topic is impossible. You need to have competing products in the niche.
Competition is a good thing.
The more competition, the better because you know the topic is really hot.
3. Are there opportunities for residual affiliate income?
If you're going to spend a lot of time working on a product and website for a particular niche, you better be sure that you are going to earn money on it for a long time to come.
If you have a choice between a niche that has a residual affiliate program and one that doesn't, always go with the former.
When you sell an affiliate product on the backend that pays you each month, you'll earn again and again for the same amount of work.
Locate a residual income program through ClickBank or simply type in "residual affiliate program + your niche keyword."
Plan ahead and find a niche that will offer you consistent income into the future.
